What's your YMCA Story?
Shannons Story“My journey with the YMCA began a year and a half ago. I originally joined, like most women to lose weight. I am a mother of two, and work full time so finding time to work out was difficult. I was unhappy with my body. I wanted to change. I wanted to feel good about myself. When I found out that the YMCA offered noon hour classes I knew this would be a perfect fit for me. Little did I know, that joining the gym would transform the way I viewed my body and would teach me more about myself then about losing weight. I’ve learned that rather then yearning for the perfect body, I need to embrace the body I have and take care of it. I need to celebrate MY body. After all it is home to my heart, my soul, it housed my children, it gives me life.
I will never forget my first class; as I was nervous and unsure if I would “fit in”. It was Zumba. For years, I had wanted to try Zumba. It was amazing. Jen & Gabrielle were fun, energetic and encouraging. I remember my eyes filling with tears at the end of class. My heart was full. I was finally doing something for myself. Making time for self care. Making myself a priority. I continue to go to their class each week. They were the spark that lit my soul on fire. This class makes me feel beautiful. I was then introduced to “Bench & Bars” with Toni. Toni’s class has taught me that I am a strong women. This class empowers me. Yoga has taught me to be still with myself. I tell Erin, her class works out my mind. This class has taught me to be in the present moment. It has taught me that gratitude brings you joy. Lastly, I have just started spin class with Jamie. I have been terrified to take this class but took a leap of faith and began a few weeks ago. I love it. I feel this class will teach me to push myself beyond my limits. It has taught me already, that your fears stand in the way of your achievements. I have also tried HIT & Tabata, which are both challenging and rewarding.
It is truly the people; both instructors and classmates that make the YMCA so wonderful. Everyone supports, encourages and celebrates your success. It has become like family. I am so grateful for this community. It has made me a more patient mother, a healthier wife, and a more loving self. I thank all of you, for walking with me on this journey. I hope to see you at noon!”
